Trump Highlights Technological Collaboration With South Korean Shipbuilders for US Navy

Date:

US President Donald Trump has suggested that South Korean shipbuilders could have a significant role in updating and broadening the US Navy, opening up the possibility of acquiring ships constructed outside American borders. During his speech at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit, Trump emphasized the importance of bolstering the aging naval fleet of the United States. He mentioned that Washington is exploring opportunities for closer collaboration with companies from South Korea and other nations.

Trump’s remarks coincided with ongoing discussions about expanding defense collaboration between the United States and South Korea. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung disclosed that Trump recently inquired about South Korea’s capability to rapidly build 10 naval vessels for the US. This topic was further explored during recent international gatherings. Meanwhile, the Pentagon and the US Navy have reached out to top South Korean shipbuilders, like HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean, to evaluate their proficiency in designing and building combat ships.

A notable development in this cooperative effort is the plan to construct two National Security Multi-Mission Vessels at Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia, a project estimated to be worth around $1.5 billion. Hanwha is seen as strategically positioned to gain from this partnership following its acquisition of Philadelphia-based shipyard facilities in 2024 and pursuit of licenses to manufacture military ships in the United States. Simultaneously, HD Hyundai and Samsung Heavy Industries have been expanding their alliances with American firms to penetrate the US naval shipbuilding sector.

Despite these progressive steps towards cooperation, there are substantial legal hurdles to overcome. Current US regulations prohibit the construction of Navy vessels outside the country, which means any overseas production would necessitate legislative approval or special exemptions. This regulatory framework poses challenges that must be addressed to realize the potential collaboration between the US and South Korean shipbuilding industries.
