Gulf Tensions Push Oil Prices to Highest Level Since May

Date:

Global oil prices have surged to their highest level in five months, reaching $112 per barrel, following a series of destabilizing attacks in Saudi Arabia and incidents affecting vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. These developments have reignited fears of significant disruptions to crude oil supplies. The price increase, marked by a 3% climb in Brent crude, was recorded on Thursday, marking the highest level since May 18.

The escalation in oil prices comes in the wake of attacks in Saudi Arabia carried out by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Wednesday. These attacks reportedly resulted in four fatalities and eight injuries, including incidents at a civilian airport in Dammam and a targeted oilfield struck by a drone.

Compounding the tension, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that its forces targeted four vessels in the northern Gulf, accusing them of illegal oil transfers. Additionally, three other vessels reportedly encountered mines west of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has warned that further provocations could lead to a broader response against U.S. regional bases, amplifying concerns over the security of this critical energy shipping route.

Despite the recent turmoil, oil exports from the Persian Gulf have managed to recover beyond pre-conflict levels. Increased pipeline shipments to the Red Sea and Gulf of Oman have helped mitigate some of the disruptions in shipping. However, the renewed attacks have introduced uncertainty about the stability of global oil supplies.

The spike in oil prices is also impacting financial markets, as major European and Asian stock indices saw declines on Thursday. This downturn is attributed to concerns that escalating energy costs could exacerbate inflation and maintain elevated borrowing costs. In the United States, American Airlines shares fell after the company cautioned that high fuel expenses might lead to a financial loss this year, underscoring the broader economic repercussions of rising oil prices.
