Judge Demands Trump Administration Unveil Tech Investment Details of $1.8 Billion Fund

Date:

A federal judge has mandated that the Trump administration disclose the origins of a proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund meant for individuals claiming to have been victims of political persecution. This directive was issued by U.S. Magistrate Judge Ivan Davis in connection with a lawsuit contesting the establishment of the fund. The lawsuit, filed by Democracy Forward, represents several plaintiffs, including a former federal prosecutor and a college professor who was acquitted following charges related to a protest against an immigration enforcement operation.

The Justice Department announced last month that the fund proposal had been scrapped, with former Justice Department official Todd Blanche stating that the fund was effectively defunct and never operational. The compensation program was initially part of a settlement involving President Donald Trump and the Internal Revenue Service. Critics of the plan voiced concerns that it could have compensated individuals prosecuted for their roles in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, among other incidents.

The proposal faced significant opposition from lawmakers across the political spectrum, including Republican senators. Questions were raised about whether the program could be resurrected despite the administration’s decision to discontinue it. Previously, a federal judge ruled in July that Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS did not present a legitimate legal conflict and had been leveraged to construct the settlement that laid the groundwork for the proposed fund.

President Trump has expressed disappointment over the discontinuation of the compensation program, stating his belief that some individuals had been unfairly targeted. The recent court order may shed light on the creation of the proposed fund and whether there are any plans to pursue compensation through alternative avenues.
