Taiwan Leader Eyes Tech Talks with Trump on U.S. Visit

Date:

Cheng Li-wun, a prominent opposition figure in Taiwan, has expressed her readiness to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump during her forthcoming visit to the United States. Cheng emphasized the significance of engaging with global leaders who can play a role in fostering regional peace and stability. Her openness to dialogue with Trump aligns with her recent interactions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, underscoring her commitment to peace through engagement with influential figures.

Prior to embarking on her two-week tour of the United States, Cheng highlighted the importance of conversations with key leaders to advance peace efforts. While she is scheduled to meet with U.S. legislators and government officials, including during her stop in Washington, Cheng has chosen not to disclose the specifics of her planned meetings.

Cheng also expressed optimism about the recent positive developments in U.S.-China relations, hoping that increased dialogue among these major powers could contribute to easing regional tensions. Her remarks come at a time when Taiwan is actively discussing its defense spending and cross-strait relations, with opposition voices advocating for a balance between military readiness and diplomatic outreach.

Addressing Taiwan’s security strategy, Cheng reiterated the importance of bolstering defense capabilities but also stressed the necessity of open communication with Beijing. She argued that such dialogue is crucial for reducing the risk of military conflict and ensuring stability across the Taiwan Strait. Cheng’s visit is seen as a pivotal moment in ongoing discussions about how Taiwan can best navigate its security and diplomatic priorities.
