Trump and Xi Conclude Summit Without AI Framework Agreement

Date:

The recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded without reaching a significant agreement on artificial intelligence (AI), a technological frontier raising international concerns. Although the three-day meeting in Washington touched upon various global issues, including trade, Taiwan, and conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, the leaders did not solidify any new frameworks for AI development.

AI was a prominent topic of discussion, with President Xi emphasizing the shared responsibility of the United States and China to develop and manage emerging AI technologies responsibly. He advocated for enhanced cooperation to address potential risks and ensure that AI remains under human control. Despite these discussions, no concrete plans or agreements emerged to regulate advanced AI systems or establish common safety protocols.

President Trump, maintaining his stance, reiterated the importance of the United States preserving its technological edge over China. He also introduced the term “super intelligence” to describe advanced AI, although the specifics of the discussions on this topic remain limited.

The summit also marked a significant diplomatic occasion, being the first visit by a Chinese president to the White House in over a decade. In addition to their discussions, Trump and Xi visited the National Archives to view pivotal US founding documents.

While the summit did result in extending the existing trade truce between the two countries for an additional two months, the absence of a major AI agreement leaves unresolved questions about the future trajectory of AI development and regulation. The two leaders are expected to reconvene later this year at both the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China and the G20 summit in the United States, providing further opportunities for dialogue on these pressing issues.
