US peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner conducted extensive discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, marking a significant step as Washington endeavors to rejuvenate peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. The White House noted that the dialogue centered around concrete plans for advancing towards a potential settlement. Following their meeting in Moscow, Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to proceed to Kyiv to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
According to Kremlin officials, the discussions encompassed various proposals for a potential resolution. However, no breakthrough was reported, and Putin emphasized the necessity of addressing the fundamental causes of the conflict while asserting that Russia is achieving progress on the battlefield. Zelenskyy commented on the Russian strikes targeting Kyiv and the Boryspil international airport, suggesting a connection to the US negotiators’ presence. He also indicated that Ukraine would modify its military strategies in response to Russia’s aerial offensives.
The US is striving to reignite negotiations after prior peace efforts failed to achieve a resolution. President Donald Trump has identified ending the war as a key foreign-policy objective, recently announcing that Witkoff and Kushner are advancing a new proposal aimed at resolving the conflict. Despite these efforts, substantial differences persist between Moscow and Kyiv. Russia maintains its demand for control over certain territories and opposes Ukraine’s NATO membership, conditions Ukraine continues to reject.
