The clock is ticking toward a November 10 deadline in the US-China trade war, adding immense pressure to an upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping.
On that date, a 90-day truce that has paused duties as high as 145% is set to expire. Trump confirmed he will meet Xi in two weeks, just before that deadline.
Ahead of the talks, Trump has made a key admission, calling his tariff policy “not sustainable.” He immediately blamed China, claiming “they forced me to do that.”
This sets the stage for a high-stakes negotiation. Trump has expressed cautious optimism, saying, “I think we’re going to be fine,” but also wariness, noting “China is always looking for an edge.”
The president’s goal is a “fair deal.” He continues to defend the “unsustainable” tariffs as necessary leverage, arguing the US would be “a nothing” without them.
