Tech-Driven Coordination Aids Repatriation of US Pilot from Papua Attack

Date:

Indonesia is actively working with the United States to return the body of American pilot Nicholas F. Goselin, who tragically lost his life in an armed assault by separatists in Papua’s Yahukimo region. The attack was claimed by the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement, which stated that the plane was targeted for purportedly defying a ban on civilian flights over territories under their control. The group also alleged that civilian aircraft were aiding Indonesian military operations by transporting troops and supplies.

Following the attack, the aircraft operated by PT AMA was set ablaze. Fortunately, the seven Indonesian passengers on board emerged unscathed, while authorities successfully retrieved and evacuated the pilot’s body. The Indonesian Foreign Ministry has confirmed its collaboration with the US Embassy in Jakarta and other relevant agencies to ensure consular access and facilitate the repatriation process for the pilot.

The Indonesian government has condemned all forms of violence against civilians, public service facilities, and aircraft that serve remote communities. They have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding foreign nationals residing in the country. Indonesian authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to uncover the circumstances surrounding this violent act.

The United States has expressed that it is attentively monitoring the ongoing investigation, though it has refrained from making additional comments to respect the privacy of the pilot’s family. This tragic event underscores the complexities and dangers present in regions affected by separatist movements, highlighting the need for continued diplomatic and security efforts.
