Tech-savvy Thomas Massie ousted in Kentucky GOP primary battle.

Date:

In a significant display of influence over the Republican Party, Donald Trump secured a victory in northern Kentucky as voters opted for his chosen candidate, Ed Gallrein, over the incumbent congressman Thomas Massie. Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, defeated Massie, a seven-term congressman, in the primary election for Kentucky’s fourth congressional district. This race was framed as a test of loyalty within the Republican Party, with Trump’s allies viewing it as a measure of dissent against the former president’s grip on the party.

Elsewhere, primary elections unfolded in five other states, marking the largest primary night of the year. In Georgia, the gubernatorial race saw lieutenant governor Burt Jones and billionaire Rick Jackson advance to a runoff for the GOP nomination, excluding Brad Raffensperger, a critic of Trump. This Republican nominee will face Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor who won the Democratic nomination. In Alabama, Tommy Tuberville, a Trump ally, won the Republican primary for governor, while Doug Jones secured the Democratic nomination. Pennsylvania voters selected nominees for competitive House races, including the elevation of Chris Rabb, known for his anti-establishment stance, reflecting internal Democratic struggles.

Trump continued to exert his influence by endorsing Ken Paxton for the Texas Senate primary runoff, challenging incumbent John Cornyn and stirring discontent within the party. Massie’s loss joins those of other Republicans like Liz Cheney and Mitt Romney, who faced challenges for their stances against Trump. Massie had frequently opposed Trump on issues such as military actions and government spending, asserting that Kentucky Republicans valued independence. However, the election results showed a preference for loyalty to Trump in the conservative district.

Throughout the campaign, Trump was vocal in his opposition to Massie, labeling him with derogatory terms and dispatching top advisers to manage a Super PAC against him. Following Massie’s defeat, Trump reiterated his disapproval, stating Massie “deserved to lose.” Despite the contentious race, Massie conceded honorably to Gallrein, calling for “basic decency” in politics. He also highlighted the impact of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which he championed, leading to high-profile resignations.

The Kentucky primary became the most expensive House race in history, with nearly $25.6 million spent on advertising. Gallrein’s campaign focused on aligning with Trump’s agenda, portraying Massie as having diverged from the “Make America Great Again” movement. Gallrein now heads into the general election as the frontrunner in a district that has consistently elected Republicans for two decades. Additionally, Trump-backed Andy Barr won the Republican primary for a Senate seat in Kentucky, aiming to succeed the retiring Mitch McConnell.
