AI-enhanced search unveiled as Google reintroduces innovative smart glasses.

Google is set to infuse its search engine with advanced artificial intelligence, marking a significant evolution in how users interact with the world’s most popular website. This announcement came during Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, where the company also reintroduced its foray into high-tech eyewear. More than a decade after its initial attempt was met with ridicule, Google is partnering with brands like Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster to launch a new line of “intelligent eyewear” that will respond to voice commands and capture photos or videos.

The core of these enhancements lies in Google’s new AI model, Gemini 3.5, which will allow the search box to handle more complex and conversational queries. This shift is designed to mimic human-like question patterns, encouraging users to interact with Google’s chatbot directly. Elizabeth Reid, who leads Google Search, emphasized the significance of these updates, labeling them as the most substantial in nearly 30 years. With this rollout, users will experience search results that integrate more visual and interactive elements, while still having the option to revert to the traditional list of links by selecting the “Web” tab.

Since the introduction of Search’s “AI Mode,” where users can engage with a Gemini-powered bot, usage of this interface has increased steadily, doubling each quarter. The AI enhancements aim to offer a more personalized and proactive user experience, according to Josh Woodward, who is at the helm of Gemini’s development. The Gemini app currently boasts 900 million monthly users, a figure that places it still behind the weekly usage numbers of ChatGPT. Google’s strategy includes broadening the reach of AI tools, such as “information agents” for subscribers of its AI Pro and Ultra plans, which can perform detailed research and present actionable summaries.

Complementing these digital advancements, Google’s venture into smart eyewear signifies a renewed commitment to augmented reality technology. This move aligns with industry trends, as illustrated by Meta’s collaboration with EssilorLuxottica on similar tech-laden glasses. Google’s new eyewear features, slated for a fall release, will be capable of executing voice commands via Gemini and capturing media. Furthermore, Google is developing a second model of smart glasses with an in-lens display, known as Project Aura, indicating the company’s future-focused vision in this space.

This strategic expansion into AI-driven tools and wearable technology underscores Google’s continued innovation in enhancing user interaction across its products. As the company integrates these intelligent systems more deeply into everyday consumer experiences, it aims to transition from tech-centric applications to broader, more accessible solutions for the general public.
