Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s envoy to the United States, underscored the critical need for ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense readiness amid escalating military tensions with China. Yui emphasized that Taiwan is actively ramping up its defense expenditures and is resolute in fortifying its capacity to address potential security threats. He highlighted that the island must not solely depend on external assistance but should also focus on enhancing its own defensive measures.
A sizable U.S. weapons package valued at approximately $14 billion for Taiwan is currently being evaluated by the U.S. administration. This proposal has garnered backing from American lawmakers who view the escalating defense requirements of Taiwan as increasingly pressing due to China’s intensified military presence and operations in the region.
Yui pointed out that military assistance should be proportionate to the perceived threat, citing the regularity of Chinese military exercises, naval deployments, and aerial maneuvers near Taiwan. He reiterated that Taiwan is committed to preserving its security and democratic values through strategic defense initiatives.
U.S. officials have affirmed that there has been no shift in Washington’s stance regarding Taiwan, emphasizing that support for Taiwan’s security remains a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship. Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Taiwan remains optimistic about the steadfast partnership with the United States.
